Due to the Gold Rush. The California Gold Rush took place in 1848-1849 and was the primary reason California was settled by Americans. San Francisco became the major outlet to the rest of the world. It was too timely to travel across land back to the east, so all commerce generated from the Gold Rush went through San Francisco, the biggest port city on the west coast. The term 49er essentially refers to the miners, explorers, and fortune hunters who came to California during this time.

That was a goldrush in 1849, not 1949....all the people that came to san fran for the goldrush were called 49ers....

from the gold rush of 1849 in california. thats why they named them that. they probably couldnt think of anything else. san diego took chargers and oakland took the raiders but they should probably switch with oakland because the raiders have no luck finding their gold.

The name was primarily an honorarium to the men who came to California in the years in and around 1849 (the largest number IN THE YEAR 1849) in search of gold during California's gold rush ---- and-- even though very few of them actually FOUND gold-- many thousands of them did stay in California and made lives there anyway---and it is still thought by many to this day that it was those that came for the gold rush and stayed to make lives there that gave the state it's true beginnings AS a state !!!

ALSO--there is the underlying meaning of the title --the fact that the team itself--at the heart of it's game -- is always in there--looking for "THE GOLD"
